From hobby to webshop



Modelcarmate originated from a passion for model cars and collecting.


In 2007, I started collecting Matchbox and Hot Wheels models — especially the cars I used to own myself or had always wanted. Soon, my interest expanded to other brands such as Majorette, SIKU, Corgi, and various other models in 1:64 scale and other scales.


As with many collectors, lack of space began to play an increasingly significant role over time. Therefore, I decided to sell duplicate models from my collection. What started as a practical solution slowly grew into a second hobby: connecting with other collectors and helping people find beautiful models.


The start of Modelcarmate

In 2008, I started an eBay store. Selling model cars turned out to be not only fun but also incredibly motivating due to the contact with other enthusiasts and the enthusiastic reactions from customers who had received their purchases in good order.


The name Modelcarmate also originated during that period. The word 'mate' means friend or buddy in English — something that fits perfectly with the atmosphere of the collecting hobby.


Over the years, the idea of having my own webshop stayed in my mind. After looking at various systems and providers, I eventually decided to set up my own webshop.


In August 2014, the foundation of Modelcarmate was laid and the webshop began to take shape. After much learning, testing, and building, the webshop slowly grew into what it is today.


On April 16, 2018, Modelcarmate was officially registered with the Chamber of Commerce, and the hobby became an official company.
